Bus and coach. What is the difference?

It sometimes happens that in less formal circumstances clients ask us what the difference is between a bus and a coach. Even though this knowledge doesn't add much to life, sometimes it's worth knowing.

For most people, using the terms bus and coach interchangeably is completely normal. From a logical point of view, this terminology is to some extent justified — after all, both the bus and the coach are large road vehicles designed for passenger transport. It is also worth noting that such a distinction does not exist in many languages. Anglophones use the umbrella term bus to describe all such vehicles.

Bus and coach: terminological difference

Wanting to point out the difference between a bus and a coach, it is good at the beginning to refer to definition of a bus contained in the Road Traffic Act. It reads as follows:

In view of the above definition, we now know for sure what the difference is between a minibus and a bus. It stems from the number of available seats in the vehicle. Citing the above definition, it is worth mentioning that in the Road Traffic Act the concept of a coach does not appear at all. Is it therefore a colloquial term for a large passenger vehicle? Not quite. 

Bus and coach: the difference arising from distance

It is often said that a bus is a vehicle designed for transport along a strictly defined route — most often located within a given city or neighbouring towns. This means that they are usually public transport vehicles. When thinking of a coach, most people picture a passenger vehicle carrying people over long distances. Often these perceptions are correct. As a rule, nobody would say they are catching a bus to the seaside from Kraków.

Difference related to the vehicle specification

Most often, the difference between a bus and a coach also implies a different level of amenities. Coaches are usually air-conditioned and equipped with various amenities, such as TVs placed by the seats, whereas buses only have passenger seats inside, and sometimes perhaps a ticket vending machine.
